Khoo Gaik Cheng

Gaik Cheng Khoo is a Malaysian academic based at the Australian National University where she teaches gender, cultural studies and Southeast Asian cinema. Her current research focuses on independent filmmaking in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. Publications include Reclaiming Adat Contemporary Malaysian Film and Literature (UBC Press, 2005), "Just-Do-It-(Yourself)": Independent filmmaking in Malaysia" (Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, 8.2, 2007), “Reading the films of independent filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad: cosmopolitanism, Sufi Islam and Malay subjectivity” in Race and Multiculturalism in Malaysia and Singapore (Eds. Goh, Gabrielpillai, Holden and Khoo, Routledge 2009) and several pieces on independent Malaysian documentaries. She is interested in race, gender, politics and culture.
